George Moxey Shield
Player of the Year

The Player of the Year award that has been named after George Moxey is awarded to the Overall player of the year from all grades. It is derived from a format designed by George Moxey after he single handley recorded 20 years of statistics and noticed that the player of the year award wasn't always awarded to the player with the best statistics.

The Maitland District Cricket Association's player of the year points were derived by a 3, 2, 1 system voted on by Umpires and Captains after each game. Some players acheivements would not be recognised as points were split between the two teams. The system designed by George Moxey gives every player, of every grade a fair chance of winning the award, instead of just the bowlers who bowl out their alloted overs, or the batsman at the top of the order. Prior to the inception of this system, there was no fdrmal club player of the year award, only players of the year for each grade.   The table below shows the Highest performer for that particular season.

In the past the Port Stephens Cricket Club utilised a simple format (shown in the table below as the PSCC System) of 1 point per run, 10 points per wicket and 5 points for run outs, catches and stumpings. In 1997-98 season the MDCA introduced the 321 point system and this became the method adopted by the Pythons (Pythons name also adopted this year) in determining the Player of the year. This method remained the norm until George introduced his system in the 2003-04 season.

The George Moxey Shield is awarded to the player that accumulates the most points based on the matrix throughout the regular season (including special matches such as the Hunter Valley Cup) and does not include finals.

The award was first presented in 2003/04 as the Player of the Year trophy, and following George's death during the C-grade grand final of 2005, the club agreed to name the award in his memory.
