At its 2025 Annual Awards Night, Port Stephens Cricket Club proudly recognised Shawn Davies with Life Membership, acknowledging over two decades of exceptional service and unwavering commitment both on and off the field.
Life Membership is the club’s highest honour, reserved for individuals whose long-standing contributions have shaped the club’s success, culture, and continuity. Shawn's record fits that standard in every sense.
He made his debut in the 2003/04 season as a fiery 15-year-old and has gone on to become one of the club’s most enduring figures. Throughout his playing career, he has featured in every grade, regularly putting the club first by stepping down from higher sides to support lower teams when needed. Whether captaining a side, filling in at the last minute, or mentoring younger players, he has always prioritised the team over individual ambition.
His playing accomplishments are wide-ranging: a century-maker, hat-trick taker, seven-wicket haul bowler, and premiership winner across A, B, and C grades in Maitland. Most recently, he played a pivotal role in the club’s 2023/24 Denis Broad Cup campaign, further demonstrating his commitment to the club across formats and competitions. For those who’ve played alongside him, it’s not just the statistics that impress -but his resilience, selflessness, and readiness to contribute wherever needed.
Beyond the boundary, Shawn has made an equally significant contribution.
He joined the committee in 2015/16 and, apart from a short break in 2017/18, has been a central figure in club operations ever since. In 2021/22, he stepped into the Vice President role, while also taking on the duties of Director of Partnerships—a position through which he secured multi-year sponsorships and helped place the club on firm financial footing for the years ahead.
When the club needed a curator after Craig Hunter’s departure, he stepped into that role too -working with Brandon Wilson and Troy Elwes to maintain King Park 5 as one of Suburban Districts’ top-rated playing surfaces. He’s also served as a selector, coordinated team availability, organised Bunnings BBQs, run raffles, and handled funding applications, often without needing to be asked.
When Josh Moxey was approached to take on the Secretary role at the Newcastle District Cricket Association (NDCA), he addressed the committee and made it clear: “If I’m to take this on, I’ll need support.” In the time since, Dave and Lisa Freeman, along with Michelle Moxey, have been instrumental behind the scenes - but it has been Shawn who has taken the biggest step forward.
With Josh’s move onto the NDCA Executive, Shawn has become a key figure in the club’s external relations. He now represents PSCC as a delegate to the NDCA and on the Port Stephens Sports Council, where he regularly advocates for resources, recognition, and opportunities that benefit all members of the club. In addition, he ensures that the everyday running of the club is on track, silently working behind the scenes to ensure nothing is left undone.
Shawn is also a two-time winner of the Clubman of the Year award, recognised by his peers for his reliability, leadership, and commitment to the club’s broader success.
Towards the end of the 2024/25 season, Shawn faced personal tragedy when his Pop passed away following a long illness. In those final weeks and days, he continued to check in on club matters, ensuring tasks were being completed, and was even seen preparing wickets at King Park when others may have stepped away. This quiet selflessness and devotion to the club did not go unnoticed.
While once known for a fiery temperament, Davies has matured into a respected and composed leader. His transformation into a reliable, thoughtful, and solution-focused contributor has made a lasting impact on the club’s culture.
The Life Membership nomination, unanimously supported by the committee and its Life Members, recognises not only what Davies has achieved, but the manner in which he has carried himself—always putting the club, his teammates, and the community first.
With his induction, Shawn Davies becomes the 15th Life Member in the club’s proud history. His legacy is already clear: a player, a leader, a volunteer, and above all, a clubman in every sense of the word.
Congratulations, Python #334.
